Tata Harrier 2020 BS6 : Exterior
What is the defining features of the Tata Harrier apart from
its bold and masculine styling, was the fact that was based on the mega arc
architecture. It is derived from the land rover v8 platform, a legendary
chassis setup, but it didn't have an automatic and we were told that an
automatic gearbox couldn't fits. All that's been changed and we have the new
2020 Tata Harrier. This is the BS6 Tata Harrier which was launched at the Auto
Expo 2020, which comes with an all-important automatic gearbox, they've also
patent a few other updates to visual tweaks on the car, more features, more
power and the all-important panoramic sunroof. Being a BS6 model update, there
aren't significant changes to the harrier, blink and you'll miss the exterior
styling tweaks which go from bits of chrome around the grill and bumpers to the
new wheels with polished faces, a suitably swish upgrade. The tweak worth
noting are the smaller wing mirrors which go a long way towards fixing the
blind spots caused by the Harrier’s earlier huge mirror.

Tata Harrier 2020 BS6 : Interior
Inside the cabin there's more writing roles. The cabin of the
harrier remains as spacious and premium as before but things like the USB
charge point up front being re-positioned, makes it far easier to reach. Meanwhile
niceties on the top and exit like an auto-dimming inner rearview mirror and
power driver seat adjustability helped a lot but these are the features we felt
the Harrier should have been offered with right at its launch. Of course the
biggest addition is full-length panoramic sunroof though the three dedicated
buttons to open the blinds pop and retract it could get a little confusing. The
infotainment screen gets new color themes. We wish it scale Android auto a
little more convincingly and had a little less lag.

Tata Harrier 2020 BS6 : Engine
So in the move to BS6 compliance, this 2-liter FCA source
engine which also does duty under the hood of the MG Hector and the Jeep
Compass finally lives up to its full potential. It's got a full 170ps of power
and torque remains unchanged at 315nm. The big talking point for this new
Harrier is of course that 6-speed automatic. So it's from Hyundai who used to
use it in the Tucson pre-facelift, it's a six-speed torque converter which Tata
have finally managed to fit in this D8 Omega Arc architecture and engine
combination. This six-speed gearbox actually seems quite idly paired to this
engine. It's actually given the engine more relaxed feel. Now the previous
Harrier, even the one with 140PS would feel like it would surge ahead once the
turbo(s) pulled up at about 2,000 rpm and driving it in a relaxed manner could
be quite tiresome because it always was training at its leash. Now it's a
similar story for the manual transmission car with 170PS which we'll get to but
the automatic seems like a far more relaxed beast.

Tata Harrier 2020 BS6 : Driving Overview
The Harrier has always had well judge ride quality with a
plain set, proving to be comfortable over bad roads, hiding most road
irregularities. Of course that does mean it leans quite a bit into corners but
that's a trade-off most customers would gladly make. Between the automatic and
the manual we also sample, the manual would be the one to pick if you were a
more spirited driver. Somehow, giving better feel from the steering and sharper
bite from the brakes. Manual transmission has been tweaked to offer better
shift quality and the slight rubbery feel from bone through the box has been
tightened up to the point where it's actually enjoyable to make shifts. These
are brand new cars though so it'd be interesting to see if the change in
starter has made all up in the long run. That's not to say that the Harrier
automatic can't be hustled when you do put your foot down there's just a slight
pause as the gearbox selects a lower gear but for most applications you'll find
that the engines got ample torquen reserve to help you keep going. Harrier has
drive modes like the city mode, eco mode and sport mode, namely.
In the
automatic harrier, the moment you shift into manual control, you go directly in
the sport mode which gives you the full 170 PS and 350 NM torque and just a
little more urgency to the way the engine building serves faces feedback. Tata
has ironed out a few kinks in the steering and braking package where the brakes
could feel slightly wooden, there's a slightly firmer feel to them right now
which is definitely more reassuring especially on the twisty cuttings and the
steering which could sometimes give a little bit of judder and a heartbreaking,
well that's been fixed. It's not as noticeable now though it is still there to
some extent. After having driven the Harrier with the manual transmission, we
can tell you that the automatic also doesn't utilize the entire 4,300 RPM rev
range on the manual car, the auto shifts are little earlier at just under 4,000
rpm but you're not really losing anything since this now makes its peak power
at about 3750 rpm at which point, it's just a lot of noise. The qualities of
the Harrier that we know and love, which include it's quite indestructible
feeling ride quality remains as it is. It's comfortable in the front seats and it's
comfortable in the rear as well.
